"Attraction of Otherness"

Excerpt:

"Oh, I think I have a lot more to worry about than I did an hour ago, that’s for sure.” He pulled her arm down so that they were holding hands over the corpse. “You tracked it here, right?”

Holly couldn’t see if the sensor glowed. It was hidden inside their linked hands.

“Who sent you, really?” he asked. “You aren’t working for the FBI.”

“Neither are you.” The words came out in a whisper.

Zeller grinned.

“Don’t do that.” Her gaze flicked between his face and their linked hands, wishing for x-ray vision. If that sensor glowed, if Max was nothing more than a better liar than Al, her heart would break.

“Look at me,” Zeller said softly.

Holly looked into the steady green eyes.

“Please don’t be afraid.” Was there a familiar kind of longing in his eyes? “You don’t have to be afraid...”
